Volume, shape or hydration: not the same thing

• Volume. Increasing the body of the lip. It is what people ask for, and what most often goes too far when it is not dosed.
• Shape and definition. Marking the vermilion border and the Cupid’s bow, correcting asymmetry or lifting dropped corners. It usually needs less product and changes the face more than pure volume.
• Hydration. A very fluid product with almost no volume, for a dehydrated lip with vertical lines. The result is a lip that looks better without looking bigger.

Some of the «obvious» lips you see are not a quantity problem: volume was chased when the issue was shape.

Hyaluronic acid only, and why

In the lips only hyaluronic acid is used. Neither Radiesse nor Sculptra belongs here: they are deep-plane products with a nodule risk in an area of constant movement, and neither dissolves with hyaluronidase.

That reversibility matters especially in the lip, because it is where most people change their mind. If the result does not convince, it is dissolved and within hours you are back to the starting point.

The gel must be flexible, not firm: it has to move with the lip. A projection gel — the kind that goes in the cheek — is palpable and visible in a lip.

What to expect in the first days

• Day 0. Immediate swelling, sometimes marked. The lip looks bigger than it will end up. Cold locally and nothing else.
• Days 1–3. Peak swelling is usually the next day. Small bruises can appear; the lip is a very vascular area.
• Day 7. It already resembles the result.
• Day 14. The real result. Nothing is judged or touched up before this date.

If you have a history of cold sores, antiviral prophylaxis is sensible: the injection can reactivate it. It is always asked at the consultation.

Warning signs, here as with any filler: pain out of proportion, skin blanching or purplish mottling. That is a same-day call, not a next-day one.

What it costs

Filler is not quoted by «area» but by product and volume, and for a reason worth understanding before you compare: two people with the same complaint can need 1 ml and 4 ml. A closed per-area price that does not say how many millilitres it includes cannot be compared with anything — the same problem as botox units.
